High Speed Internet
Q. Can I have
multiple IP addresses?
A:
Building Technologies offers Multiple IP addresses
for customers who wish to connect more than
one computer to a single modem. There is a
small additional fee per computer. For more
information, click
here.
Q: My Internet connection is slow, what is
causing this?
• It could actually be due to your telephone
cables. The length and quality of your high
speed modem cables can directly affect your
Internet speed. Neither of the cables running
into your modem should be more than 6 feet
long. Anything longer and your Internet speeds
may be degraded. Damaged cables can also affect
the quality of your Internet access.
• How quickly you receive information
depends on how fast the server you are connecting
to is responding. For example, if yahoo.com
is slow, the Web page will be slow for anyone
connecting to it. You may receive a faster
response if you use a proxy server. It is
also a good idea to periodically clear the
cache in your browser.
Q. Can not access some Web sites?
A: If you're using
Windows 2000 or Windows XP and are having
trouble accessing some Web sites, you may
need to disable LCP extensions and multilink.
Q. Do you find that
the longer you browse with Internet Explorer,
the slower it gets?
A: If you surf a lot,
and especially if you visit sites that have
a lot of images, sounds, or videos, you might
benefit from increasing your browser's cache
size.
1. Click Tools
then Internet Options. 2.
In the dialog box, click the General
tab then click the Settings
button under "Temporary Internet
Files". 3. In the "Settings"
dialog box, drag the slider to set the amount
of disk space. 4. Click OK
to close the window.
As a general rule, you can set the amount
of disk space reserved for your cache between
1 and 4 per cent of your total hard disk capacity.
Q: I can not connect
to a Web site. What is causing this?
A: Web sites exist
all over the world and are hosted on different
servers. If a server is not available, no
one will be able to visit any sites on that
server.
Q: What is a firewall?
Do I need one?
A: For
the average Internet user you do not need
a firewall. Firewalls can be complicated and
can cause problems with your Internet connection
if you do not have it configured properly.
If you choose to install a firewall, be prepared
to learn what the firewall is doing and why.
In some cases, there have been incidences
where the firewall is blocking the Incoming
or Outgoing Internet access or traffic.
Q: What is anti-virus
software and should I be using it?
A: Anti-virus software is
a class of program that searches your hard
drive and floppy disks for any known or potential
viruses. As well as scanning your computer
for an existing virus, anti-virus software
can check your incoming emails for an attached
virus. Since computer viruses are an unfortunate
reality of the Internet, usually distributed
via email, it is recommended to have anti-virus
protection.

Troubleshooting
Q. Does your
browsing seem to be getting really slow?
A: Here are a few
things you could try that might speed it up:
1. Clear your browser's
cache:
Netscape Communicator, click
the Edit menu, then click Preferences; click
Advanced, then click Cache, then click Clear
Cache.
Internet Explorer, click
the Tools menu, then click Internet Options,
then under "Temporary Internet files"
click Delete Files.
2. Empty your Recycle Bin:
right-click on the Recycle Bin on your Desktop,
then click Empty Recycle Bin.
3. Delete Temporary Internet files:
Double-click My Computer, then right-click
your hard disk icon (c:), then click Properties,
then click Disk Cleanup and follow the directions.
Q. Having problems connecting
with High Speed service?
A: Try resetting your
modem. Simply shut down your computer, then
turn your high speed modem off using the power
button on the modem, wait 30-45 seconds and
then turn it back on. Once the modem lights
remain steady, you're ready to try again -
turn your computer on and connect to the High
Speed service.
Q: How do I stop those
annoying pop up advertisements?
A:
The problem is that certain web sites run
scripts that will set your homepage, and add
pop up windows whenever you connect to the
net. There are programs you can get to remove
the ads. If you do a search at: tucows.accesscomm.ca
you will find share ware programs that can
do the trick. Some are completely free and
others may work for a period of time then
may ask you to purchase the program.
Q. Having problems with
my High Speed service?
A:
If you are experiencing any problems with
your high speed service, try one or more of
the following troubleshooting tips.
• Make sure that you have placed the
phone filters provided with your kit on all
of the phones, fax machines and other devices
that are connected to a phone line. Make sure
you do not put a filter on the line for the
PPPoE modem. If you plan on using a splitter
make sure to plug the splitter directly into
the wall jack and place a filter on any of
the outlets on the splitter that will not
be connected to the modem.
• Make sure all physical connections
(power, phone and network cables) are firmly
and securely connected.
• Try powering off the modem for a few
seconds and powering it back on again. If
you are using a router, switch or hub, make
sure to power them off too and power them
back on only once the PPPoE modem is up and
running.
• Try using different phone and network
cables.
• Try disconnecting all phones, faxes
and other devices and then powering the modem
off and on.
• Try connecting the PPPoE modem to
a different phone outlet than the one you
are using.
